Our Story

Hop Scotch is the creation of sisters Rachel and Chris, mothers to 5 boys with a love for wood toys (especially the handmade ones) and a love of crafting.

It all started when one sister, Rachel, became very involved in the local food economy and in shopping locally. She just couldn’t find what she wanted for her child (back then she only had one); so, she figured there must be others like her who couldn’t find what they wanted. She went to see her sister, Chris. She felt the same way too!

Together, they decided to open a children’s store- one that specialized in locally crafted products. They believed that if they could provide quality artisan made products in one location, customers would feel connected to their purchases in a more meaningful way and know that they were contributing to a healthier community.

Before long the sisters began to look for even more ways to support the needs of their customers; always putting the health of the children and the local community first, then looking for ways to support the global community. Over time their product lines grew to include fair trade artisans in developing countries, small US manufacturers, Michigan-Based Companies, and Sustainable/eco-conscious manufacturers. This combination of thoughtful and creative products will be sure to inspire you to re-think the way you shop!
